I have an old fishing book that helpfully includes a growth rate chart for the Ballan Wrasse (Labrus bergylta). It’s an interesting view for sure. I know you can age fish by counting the bands on fish scales, in the same way you would count rings in a tree trunk. If there’s any kind of accuracy in this graph it ages a 52cm Ballan Wrasse, like the one pictured here at somewhere around 40 years old! Hard to imagine a fish like this surviving 40 long, dark, cold winters, countless storms and so on. Incredible!
